Why DIY?

Before I was pregnant, I wanted to answer the question: “Can I be my own midwife?”

So I set about beginning to study midwifery.  I thought that, if I learned to suture, I could be sufficiently prepared to attend my own birth (even in the middle of nowhere).

What happened instead was that I learned how unnecessary most “attending” of births actually is.

I did learn to suture, but I also learned that sutures are often more harmful than helpful.

I learned how to attend births, but I also learned that birth works best when left alone.

Finally, I put everything I knew into preparing for my own birth—at home, mostly by myself, with my partner.

We had everything we wanted and nothing we didn’t.  It was wonderful.

Here at Birth.DIY, you’ll find resources and stories of DIY fertility, pregnancy, birth, and beyond.
